DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY

At least four people were killed and nine were hospitalized in a school shooting in Georgia on Wednesday morning.
  • A shooter, identified as a 14-year-old boy, opened fire at the Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, according to CNN. The suspect is alive and was taken into custody. As many as 30 people may be injured, the outlet reported earlier in the day citing law enforcement officials, although it was unclear how many injuries were from gunshot wounds.
  • “This is an awful thing that we put our kids through,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), a leading advocate for gun control measures in Congress, told What A Day. “I don’t think we need to choose to force our kids to live in fear when they walk through the hallways of their schools. That’s ridiculous. It only happens in America, and it continues to be a choice.”
  •  “It doesn’t have to be this way,” Vice President Kamala Harris told a crowd in New Hampshire during a campaign stop, while calling for an end to the gun violence epidemic in the United States. David Hogg, a founder of March for Our Lives movement, wrote on X that “it’s fucking unacceptable we act like there’s nothing we can do.”
The shooting is just another example of how vulnerable Americans remain to gun violence, especially in states with weak gun control laws.
  • We don’t know the motive of the shooter or how they obtained their weapon yet. But Georgia is ranked 46th in the country for gun control, according to Everytown for Gun Safety. In 2017, the state legislature passed a law allowing guns on college and university campuses. In 2022, Georgia also passed permitless carry legislation. Georgia also doesn’t require private gun sellers to conduct background checks.
  • The Biden administration has worked on numerous gun control measures, including a recent effort to require thousands more dealers to do background checks at gun shows or other places aside from brick-and-mortar stores. A Harris-Walz administration is widely expected to continue those efforts.
  • Murphy warned that disgraced former President Trump — who’s associated with the far-right Project 2025 document that includes policies to undermine gun control — could stymie any breakthroughs. “We didn’t make any progress with Trump. I mean, it was just all a show,” Murphy said, referring to his own past talks with the former president about gun control legislation. “Why would anybody want to go back to the days under Trump when crime was spiraling, and we had a president in the White House who cared more about a company’s profit than the safety of our kids?”
Among developed countries, gun violence remains a uniquely American problem — and one that’s entirely preventable. But, as Murphy put it, “there’s no saving the country from the gun lobby if the gun lobby wins the 2024 election.”

NEWS NEWS NEWS

Kamala Harris held a rally in New Hampshire on Wednesday, a state that a top Trump volunteer admitted is “no longer a battleground.” The vibes among Democrats who attended were strong, people involved in the planning told What A Day, pointing out that Harris’ campaign has 17 field offices in the state while Republicans only have one. No no no; nice try, New Hampshire. This isn’t over until Election Day. We’re not taking a single state for granite (I’m so sorry I hate myself).

The Biden administration accused Russia of a sustained effort to meddle in the November presidential election, via state-run media and other online platforms to push disinformation. The White House condemned the actions, while the DOJ announced criminal charges targeting Russians involved. Stop me if you think you’ve heard this one before!

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba resigned on Wednesday in the country’s biggest administrative shakeup since Russia’s invasion in 2022. Ukrainian diplomat Andrii Sybiha is expected to take over, a person close to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office told What A Day.

Mark Robinson, a GOP candidate for governor in North Carolina, is denying that he was something of a porn aficionado back in the day, contrary to a local (um, awkward-laughter-type unsettling) press report. His campaign called the article “Democrat activist fan-fiction,” as if that didn’t kinda sound like its own curious sub-genre of bodice-ripper romance novels? Whatever works for you, I guess!!

Democrats didn’t run for half of all partisan offices across the country in the 2022 midterms, over three times the rate of Republican no-shows, according to a New York Times analysis. Friendly reminder: Most of you are probably eligible to run for office and can play an active role in defending democracy. And you know who doesn’t sit on the sidelines? Far-right psychos ready to do harm on day one.

Tim Sheehy, who’s running to oust Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), used racist stereotypes about Native Americans during private fund-raisers last year, according to local outlet Char-Koosta News. It’s worth noting that 6 percent of the state’s population is made up of Indigenous residents, and Montana is home to seven reservations and 12 tribes. Many Native Americans, like the rest of us, weren’t surprised about the Trump-endorsed candidate’s despicable actions.
